Looking back on 2019 SA LC Champs

Earlier this year Coach Marshall, Team Manager Erin, fathers Paul and myself Rowan took 15 swimmers to Adelaide to compete in the 2019 South Australia Long Course Championships. Not only did we get them there, keep them fed (that’s a lot of food – my sightseeing of Adelaide included Woolworth, Coles, IGA and Aldi and any number of butchers and bakers), and survived a record-breaking 46.6 degree day (held since 1939) – but they also managed to swim well and to top it all off we managed to get them home again, ID or not… Coco Smargiassi, Kai Sepkus, Ned Shepherd, Tom Gawned and Zachary Wells all managed to make it into the finals – an excellent achievement as only the two fastest non-SA swimmers were allowed to compete in finals. Tom managed to come away with 3 Gold (50m 100m Free and 50m Back), 3 Silver (100m 200m Back and 100m Fly), and 2 Bronze (50m Breast and 50m Fly) and Ned picked up a Bronze in 50m Back. Our medley relay team of Tom, Jacques, Zac and Jake also picked up a Bronze. Now, I don’t come from a small family, but far out these kids could eat. Masterchef Paul and I were constantly on the go trying to keep the food rolling out but these kids would step up and offer to help where they could, dicing and slicing, grating and plating… together as a team we made it happen. It wasn’t all work and no play for the kids. Many of them found themselves swimming or queuing next to Olympians and I think most managed to get selfies with the abundance of champions kicking around. There was always a tally followed by giggles and stories of their escapades on the bus ride home each evening. So here I’ll sign off by saying thanks to the kids for the fantastic adventure you’re all awesome. #daddysquad
